Bakelite steering wheels are a distinctive feature of many classic and vintage vehicles. Unlike modern leather-trimmed steering wheels, Bakelite is an early form of hard thermosetting plastic that was widely used in automotive interiors because of its strength, durability and ability to be moulded into intricate shapes.

Over time, however, Bakelite can become faded, scratched, chipped, stained or develop minor surface cracking. Years of sunlight, temperature changes and general use can leave an original steering wheel looking tired and neglected.

Specialist Restoration, Not Just Replacement

Where the condition allows, we can carefully assess the steering wheel and determine whether it can be repaired and restored rather than replaced.

Minor cracks and surface imperfections can sometimes be carefully repaired, prepared and refinished to bring the wheel back to a much better condition while retaining as much of the original component as possible.

Our approach is not simply to cover up the damage. We take the time to understand the condition of the Bakelite, identify what can realistically be restored and then carefully prepare the surface before refinishing.

Dedicated Paint & Finishing Facilities

One of the advantages of our workshop is that we have a dedicated paint area, allowing us to carry out specialist preparation, colour matching and refinishing work as part of the restoration process.

Once repairs have been completed, the steering wheel can be carefully prepared and refinished to achieve a consistent, durable appearance. Where appropriate, we can restore the colour and finish to complement the original vehicle or work towards a specific restoration requirement.

Every Wheel Is Assessed Individually

Bakelite can vary considerably in condition, and not every damaged steering wheel will be suitable for restoration. Deep structural cracks, severe deterioration or extensive damage may limit what can safely be achieved.

However, we are always willing to look at wheels that other trimmers may consider beyond economical restoration. Our background goes beyond traditional automotive trimming, combining trimming skills, restoration experience, mechanical understanding and a practical problem-solving approach.

Our aim is simple: restore as much of the original steering wheel as realistically possible while preserving its character and keeping the finished result appropriate for the vehicle.
